For extra texture, pattern, and warmth, try wrapping a sweater over your shoulders. 

The best part about this fit is it looks great every step of the way:

Step 1:  Base layer with a soft grey sweater and wide-leg jeans.

Step 2: Layer up with a neutral trench coat.

Step 3: Add that special striped detail of a striped sweater around your shoulders. It gives almost the same effect as a scarf but with a little extra warmth.
